Lecture and conversation with tech expert Marietje Schaake and senior policy advisor Ria Roerink
More and more people are using Apple Pay or Google Pay to link their bank card to their phone or smartwatch. This makes it easy to pay in a shop, even if you forget your wallet. Sounds handy!
Companies like Apple and Google have been trying to get a foot in the door of the payment system for years. They now offer a wide range of financial services, from savings accounts to loans. Tech companies’ activities in the financial market will only grow in the coming years. European legislation is in the making, but these companies are not currently regulated like ‘ordinary’ banks.
What does the future hold for tech companies like Apple and Google in the financial sector? We will talk about this with Marietje Schaake, technology policy expert and author of the book The Tech Coup, and Ria Roerink, Senior Policy Adviser for De Nederlandsche Bank.
Marietje Schaake was an MEP for D66 between 2009 and 2019. She is now a Non-Resident Fellow at Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center and a Fellow at the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. She is also a columnist for the Financial Times. She published her book, The Tech Coup, this year.
Ria Roerink is Senior Policy Adviser for De Nederlandsche Bank and co-author of the report Changing landscape, changing supervision
