About the art collection

De Nederlandsche Bank has been acquiring art since the late nineteenth century, and the collection has changed over the years. Based on our own vision of art, we purchase new works, organise exhibitions and seek collaborations.

Why do we collect art?

De Nederlandsche Bank collects art that inspires and keeps you on your toes. Artists hold up a mirror to us and capture the spirit of the times. Over time, our ambition has shifted from art that creates a more pleasant working environment to works that encourage dialogue.

Our approach to art: vision and policy

De Nederlandsche Bank collects contemporary art that changes the way you see the world. Works that are bold, experimental, relevant and innovative. That encourage the exchange of ideas or help us better understand social issues. The works we acquire span a wide range of disciplines and are made by artists from a variety of backgrounds, with a focus on emerging and newly successful artists. What unites their work is that it can have an impact on Dutch society, including the Caribbean Netherlands. The art collection thus reflects the core values of De Nederlandsche Bank: committed, open, dependable and alert.

History of the art collection

The art collection has grown considerably over the years.  Towards the end of the nineteenth century, directors began to occasionally buy works of art, mainly for their own offices. Today, the focus of our acquisitions is on social engagement. Our collection is always evolving. History in brief.

Loans and collaborations

De Nederlandsche Bank aims to support and promote the development of art in the Netherlands. We do this by commissioning artists and collaborating with museums and other organisations, which can also loan works from our collection. Interested in one of our works? De Nederlandsche Bank is a member of the Netherlands Association of Corporate Art Collections (VBCN), the International Association of Corporate Collections of Contemporary Art (IACCCA) and the Foundation for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (SBMK).
