Gold as a display of power

The power of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great is evident in every detail of this imposing gold coin.

He is depicted on both sides as a strong and dynamic ruler, with attributes that symbolically emphasise his power. The large size (48 mm) and value of this gold piece, a whopping nine solidi (40.5 g), make it even more impressive. The coin, intended as a gift for high-ranking individuals, was minted in 330 CE to celebrate the inauguration of the new Roman capital Constantinople, today's Istanbul.

Historische goudenmunt wordt getoond.
