Partnerships

De Nederlandsche Bank participates in various projects and contributes to national and international databases. The aim is to build and share knowledge. Below is an overview of our various partnerships.

Van Gelder Research Grant and Lecture

The Van Gelder Research Grant aims to promote interdisciplinary and educational research on coins, banknotes and medals. Grant recipients are awarded € 10,000, which a researcher can use to prepare a publication and carry out follow-up research or set up educational projects. The results of this research are presented at the annual Van Gelder Lecture. The grant is managed by De Nederlandsche Bank, the Royal Dutch Numismatic Society and the Netherlands Medal Cabinets Foundation.

Encyclopaedia of Coins and Banknotes

The Encyclopaedia of Coins and Banknotes is one of the most important numismatic reference works in the Netherlands. This digital encyclopaedia was first published in 1986 and now contains about 6,000 entries. Managed by De Nederlandsche Bank, its aim is to actively share information on the history of money and means of payment with a wide audience.

Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum the Netherlands

The Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum (SNG) is an international research project. Its aim is to publish catalogues of ancient Greek coins from national and private collections to make them accessible for further study. Since 2021, the Netherlands has been working on publishing its own SNG catalogues. These will contain the nearly 20,000 Greek coins from the National Numismatic Collection, described according to the academic standards of the SNG series. A team of researchers is working on this project in close cooperation with De Nederlandsche Bank, which is also helping to fund the project.

International databases

Parts of the National Numismatic Collection can also be accessed through various international databases for specific areas of international monetary history. You can find coins from De Nederlandsche Bank’s collection in databases with coins from the Roman Republic, the Roman Empire, the Ptolemaic Empire, the Seleucid Empire and Bactria.

Universities

One of our curators is a regular guest lecturer at Leiden University. Students get to examine the objects from our collection for themselves in hands-on seminars. These seminars are also frequently organised for other universities, as part of Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.
