Artist Anna Ostoya (1978)
Title Painted Collaged Visual Pseudomorphism
Year 2010
Material Oil on canvas
About the work This work is reminiscent of the paintings by avant-garde artists of the early 20th century. Yet this painting was not created in 1910, but a century later by Anna Ostoya, who combined two paintings by Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg and Polish artist Hendryk Stazewksi. On the one hand, she refers to the influence of their art and ideas. On the other, she asks critical questions about their quest for a universal and objective visual language. Art always takes on new forms, according to Ostoya, depending on who you are, where you live and the era you were born in. In this work, she questions the idea that there is a single universal truth.
About the artist Ostoya’s fragmentary paintings, collages and photomontages are not limited to a single genre and are bursting with references to art history. By devising new links, she questions the ideas and images that have shaped (art) history. At the same time, her works create space for novel ideas and perspectives. She studied at the Parsons School of Art and Design in Paris (1997-2001), the Städelschule in Frankfurt (2002-2005) and attended the Whitney Independent Studio Program (2008-2009) in New York. She has lived and worked in New York since then.
In the collection Acquired in 2011. De Nederlandsche Bank has six works by Ostoya. Her work fits well in the collection because it reveals the interconnectedness of art and the ideas that shape society.
